History of Masjid Al-Istiqamah

Masjid Al Istiqamah is the second mosque to be built under Phase 3 of the Mosque Building Fund Project headed by Muis. The building is located at the corner of Yio Chu Kang Road and Ang Mo Kio Ave 3, with the front entrance at Serangoon North Ave 2, directly facing Blk 139 on the opposite side of the street. The mosque lies within the Marine Parade GRC.

The new mosques built within this phase are named after virtuous qualities as a continuation from the first one – Masjid Al-Khair (The Good). Initially, Muis suggested the name “As-Sobr” (The Patient) for this mosque but after consultation with a few asatizah, the name “Al-Istiqamah” (the Constant) was selected.

When the plot for the mosque building was purchased on 12 August 1992, the fund raising arm of the JPM (Mosque Building Committee) was not even formed! The estimated amount needed was $700,000 for the basic requirements in the initial stage of building. So few people came forward to volunteer their services that an advertisement had to be put out in the Berita Harian newspaper.

Although it is clearly situated in the North-eastern part of the island, Al-Istiqamah Mosque lies within the Marine Parade GRC which covers largely the south-east region… only just. In fact, its fringe location borders 3 CDC’s. As a result of its geographical uniqueness, for administrative purposes, it is tasked with the responsibility to serve parts of the Northeast (Hougang, Sengkang), Central (Ang Mo Kio) and Southeast (Marine Parade) CDC’s. Note:In March 2006, as a result of the pre-General Election constituency reshuffle, Masjid Al-Istiqamah was relocated to the Aljunied constituency.

When the JPM (Mosque Building Committee) was formed in October 1994 together with JPM Pasir Ris (which went on to build Masjid Al-Istighfar and JPM Bishan, a different challenge existed – that of the ‘competition’ to raise funds against the neighbouring, more established mosques: Masjid Haji Yusoff which sought to rebuild, and Masjid En-Naeem Masjid Al-Muttaqin to extend their existing structure. This, on top of the almost saturated ‘fund-raising scene’ generated by other mosques and madrasahs throughout Singapore.

Alhamdulillah, with the help of Allah, and through the asbab of the show of solidarity by the members of the JPM and support from the Muslim community not only within the Hougang/Serangoon/Ang Mo Kio area but the whole of Singapore, all obstacles were overcome and on 11 June 1999, Masjid Al-Istiqamah was declared waqaf and began its operation as a full-fledged mosque. On 17 June 2000, Masjid Al-Istiqamah was officially opened by the then Permanent Secretary for Education Mr Mohamed Maidin Packer Mohd.
